Westchester County Probate
Westchester County is located north of New York City and shares its eastern border with the state of Connecticut. Home to almost one million residents, it is the second wealthiest county in New York and ranks seventh in the United States in median household income. Its two largest and most well–known cities are Yonkers and White Plains, and the entire county is one of the oldest suburbs of New York. Westchester has also been home to many famous residents, including captains of industry Nelson and John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and former President Bill Clinton and current Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Probate proceedings are complicated and intimidating, particularly for those who do not understand the laws that govern the probate process or its purpose. Probate is the process by which a person’s will is examined and declared a valid and binding legal document. Because a will contain instructions to distribute the decedent’s assets, the Surrogate’s Court performs the will examination carefully to ensure that it has not been tampered with and is not fraudulent in any way to ensure that the decedent’s wishes are accurately carried out.
